In today’s scenario cars are like bread and butter for upper middle and upper class people. Those people earn more than 30k are going for a car. Now the question is which car they grab? There are 50/60 variants are available in the market so which one is the best for them. Maruti is the leading car making company in India where as Toyota is the global leader and Honda. Hyundai, Nisan, GM, Ford are in the queue. We are not taking the example of BMW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Bentley etc because they are treated as dream chariot of a general customer point of view. Generally there are three categories: SUV, Hatchback and Sedan.
Tata Sumo is the highest selling SUV. But it generally used in commercial purpose. Very few people use it as personal vehicle. The other SUV’s are – Sumo Grande, Scorpio, Bolero, Safari, Inova, CRV, Endeavour, Pajero, Fortuner etc. Last four are associated with 20 lace club. So it is too much expensive for general people. Others are within 10 laces except Innova. Now most of the families are nuclear, normally 3/4 members are there. So, why they go for SUV?
Now the competition is between hatchback and sedan. Popular sedan – City, Civic, Corolla, Sonata, Linea, Sx4, Camay, Cedia, Icon, Lancer, Fiesta, Aveo, Optra, Octavia, Swift Dzire, Verna etc. Some Popular hatchbacks are – Alto, Zen Estilo, Wagon R, Swift, A-star, Santro, i20, i10, Indica, Jazz, Spark, and Punto etc. Generally we see that the prices of hatchbacks are between 2 to 4 laces and case of sedan it is 6 onwards.
In present situation sale of sedan cars are affected by hatchback cars. Income level of people is increasing day by day. Now they are able to go for a car and their budget is within 5 laces. They consider 3 factors like – millage, garage and parking lot. So naturally they chose hatchback. Every company wants to grab this new market and that is why companies are now introducing hatchback rather than sedan. Honda deals with sedan named City, City ivtek, Accord, Civic but now they introduce Jazz (7 laces). Nissan introduce Micra (4 to 5.5 laces), Fiat brings Punto (4 to 6.2 laces), Skoda enters this market through Fabia (5 to 7.5 laces), Volkswagen introduce Polo (4.4 to 5.80 laces) after huge success of Santro Hyundai creates i10, i20 (4.8 to 5.8 laces) and i30 is in the queue. All the products are running successfully. The reason behind is fuel efficiency, availability of spare parts and service center, easy to move and parking. A normal sedan gives 8-10 km/lt. where as hatchback provides 14-20 km/lt and maintenance is lower than sedan. General people go for Rollick, Quality Walls or Amul ice cream but few people go for Baskin Robins, Mammamia or Ben & Jerry ice cream.
